The Controlled Waste Regulations 1992 defines ‘offensive waste’ – a type of clinical/ hazardous waste - as waste which is unpleasant and may offend the senses. Examples of offensive waste include:
Sanitary hygiene waste
Protective garments and outer dressings that haven’t been contaminated with bodily fluids
Some wastes from tattoo businesses
Some dental waste
This type of waste is stored in bins or bags colour-coded yellow and black. The waste is usually incinerated or taken to a non-hazardous landfill site by a registered waste carrier.
Of course, as an organisation that generates offensive waste, you have a duty of care to ensure that this waste is categorised (according to the appropriate European Waste Catalogue (EWC) code), stored, removed and disposed of safely – and legally.
You can only meet these requirements if, in addition to all the other things you need to do, you employ a professional, competent, Environment Agency licenced waste collection company – such as Waste King – which can provide you with Duty of Care certification.
