Pharmaceutical Waste

If you, or your organisation, generates pharmaceutical waste, the law says that you’re responsible for that waste and the methods you choose by which to dispose of it.

For one thing, if you or your osignrganisation generates over 500kg of clinical or hazardous waste in a year, you’ll need to register, as a producer of hazardous waste, with the Environment Agency annually.

This means that you’ll receive a unique registration number. Among other things, you’ll need to quote this on the paperwork relating to your clinical/ hazardous waste. If you don’t have an Environment Agency registration number and your organisation isn’t exempt under the legislation, your waste can’t – legally - be collected.

Storing, transporting, destroying and disposing of pharmaceutical waste is – as you’d expect – strictly governed by law. This process includes the collecting and disposing of drugs, gloves and prescription medicines, including cytotoxic and cytostatic wastes.

As the waste’s producer, you have a legal obligation to dispose of this waste in a way that protects you, your staff and the environment. Moreover, you have a duty of care to ensure that this waste is categorised (according to the appropriate European Waste Catalogue (EWC) code), stored, removed and disposed of safely – and legally.

Among other things, this means that there’s a fair amount of paperwork involved in the process.

That’s where a professional, competent, Environment Agency licenced waste collection company – such as Waste King – can provide both a fast and efficient waste collection service and also provide you with the required paperwork. This includes Duty of Care certification as well as a consignment note detailing the type of waste, its EWC code, the quantity collected, the waste’s components, the hazard code and container type.
