Acupuncture Waste

Performing acupuncture involves using swabs. These, along with any waste containing anatomical residue resulting from the acupuncture activities could pose a threat to those who come into contact with it. This means that it’s ‘clinical, or hazardous, waste’ – and needs to be stored, labelled and disposed of accordingly, in order to comply with The Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005.

As the waste’s producer, you have a duty of care to ensure that this waste is:

  • Stored,bin

  • Categorised (according to the appropriate European Waste Catalogue (EWC) code – so that the company that collects the waste knows how to treat it),

  • Removed and

  • Disposed of safely – and legally.

Moreover, you have a legal obligation to dispose of this waste in a way that protects you, your staff and the environment.

The Regulations state that you must segregate the hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

When it comes to the clinical/hazardous waste, you’ll need specific receptacles for this waste – and they must be placed close to treatment areas. In particular, you’ll need an appropriate sharps bin for your needles, syringes and all other sharp instruments.

Since there are Regulations that relate to the waste that your activities are producing, there’s a fair amount of paperwork involved in the process.

That’s where a professional, competent, Environment Agency licenced waste collection company – such as Waste King – can provide both a fast and efficient waste collection service and also provide you with the required paperwork. This includes Duty of Care certification as well as a consignment note detailing the type of waste, its EWC code, the quantity collected, the waste’s components, the hazard code and container type.
